How to Hire a Cybersecurity Firm

As we’ve detailed in a number of posts, it’s imperative for your business security to have an expert help keep your data and intellectual property safe from hackers. Hopefully, we’ve convinced you to get an outside perspective and maybe engage a professional (or team of them) to map a plan for you.

Good help in this area is definitely an investment of time and money. But how much is the security of your intellectual property worth to you? How much will it cost you and your business if you fall victim to hacking or some other kind of security breach? We cannot overstate the financial, emotional, and sometimes reputation damage an attack can do.

When you hire a firm and invest your resources, you want to make sure they are the best fit for your business. They should be reputable, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. You don’t want to hand over the “keys” to your business’s cybersecurity to just anyone who calls him or herself an expert.

Here are a few tips for hiring a cybersecurity firm for your business:

  1. Ask for a referral. Know others in a similar trade or industry? Someone with a similarly sized business or security needs? Ask who they’ve used, and maybe more importantly if they’d recommend them! Word of mouth is often the best way to start a search like this.
  2. Talk to more than one firm. Sometimes it comes down to how personalities mesh, how a firm does their pricing, or even where they’re located. More often, though, it’s about how comfortable and confident you feel in one firm’s abilities over another. There are a number of points to consider when it comes to hiring, so be sure you cover your bases. It can also be helpful to have a few different perspectives to your situation and price points.
  3. Check references. We can’t stress this enough: if a firm doesn’t have enough clients willing to speak up for them, they aren’t worth working with! Prepare questions for them beforehand to make sure you get everything answered.
  4. Quit waiting for the right time. There isn’t one. Next quarter, next year, next fiscal year, after that hire…. Whatever reason(s) you have for putting this off, they aren’t good reasons. You can’t wait another day to get your cybersecurity in order.
